WALL-E

Computer, define dancing.
Okay, we all know Disney and Pixar know how to tell a story. We all know the animation in their movies is unrivaled. They know how to play with your emotions wonderfully to make you feel like a kid again. All this taken into account, I do believe they have outdone themselves. I’ve enjoyed their films for years, but not in a long, long time have I been so touched by their beautiful outlook on the simplicities of life.
The film has little dialogue, but it makes up for this with a magnificent focus on the bare bones of human characteristics; body language. This simplicity of character interaction has always been enthralling to witness, no matter who the viewer. This is because at the very core, it’s who we really are. No façade. No lies. Just us. Language itself is truly a great thing, but its immense value is rivaled only by its immense glorification. Words tend to complicate and curtain the natural wonder of basic communication. Words almost tell you how to feel, but body language lets you decide for yourself. After all, communication is more about body language than anything else. It is this basis that allows the viewer to invest themselves into something all the more (this is why we all love to have pets).
It is without question that the character of WALL-E is ridiculously lovable. His awkwardness, clumsiness, and bad luck make him seem like somewhat of a sympathetic character, but his child-like demeanor, friendliness and genuinely good nature added into this mix instead reveals an irresistible charm and shows him to be one-of-a-kind. If anything, there is a wonderful irony in that WALL-E is arguably the most human character in the film.

Personally, the one theme that stood out the most to me and had most of my attention was the relationship between WALL-E and EVE. The growth of their relationship is comically mirrored in real life to a young, awkward suitor and the courtship of his love interest. It was rather enjoyable to witness WALL-E’s attempts at getting closer to an initially hostile EVE who soon grows to befriend and eventually care for WALL-E. The affection that they share was brilliant and was undoubtedly my favourite theme of the movie.
While telling an entertaining and lovely science fiction story, the film also manages to lay the foundation for important ecological issues which are very apparent and relevant in real life. While being sure to hold onto the basis of entertaining fiction, it still gives us a glimpse of what could become of us and our home should we not act sooner than later. Never before has a Disney/Pixar story been so propelled by a powerful and important message.
WALL-E left me in a very warm-hearted place by its conclusion. Its simple, loving nature and subtle humour provoked endless smiles (interestingly another simple human characteristic but possibly the most powerful one). It was truly one of the most captivating and genuinely nice movies. Simply put, it’s quite possibly the cutest movie you’ve ever seen.
